1827 Jyotirao Govindrao Phule was born

Jyotirao Govindrao Phule is an renowned social reformer and the pioneer of women education in India. In 1884 Phule started his first school for girls. Phule, was a staunch supporter of equal rights and On 24 September 1873, he along with his followers, formed the Satyashodhak Samaj (Society of Seekers of Truth) to attain equal rights for people from lower castes.

1886 Kasturba Gandhi was born

Kasturba Mohan Das Gandhi, wife of Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi, is an Indian political activist. Her contribution to the Indian freedom struggle against British Rule is commendable.

1934 Srinivasacharya Raghavan was born

Srinivasacharya Raghavan is an Indian Mathematician. He works in number theory and was awarded Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology.

1945 Buchenwald liberated

The American Third Army liberates the Buchenwald concentration camp, near Weimar, Germany, a camp that is judged second only to Auschwitz in the horror and torture imposed on the prisoners.

1970 Apollo 13 launch

Apollo 13, the 3rd lunar landing mission, is successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert and Fred W. Haise, were part of this mission. The prime object of this mission was to explore the Imbrium Basin and conduct geological experiments. However, after a technical glitch, the new objective of the mission became to get the Apollo 13 crew back home safe.

1979 Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Overthrown

Ugandan dictator Idi Amin flees the Ugandan capital of Kampala as Tanzanian troops and forces of the Uganda National Liberation Front close in. Two days later, Kampala fell and a coalition government of former exiles took power.
