Indian mathematician, Gopinath Kallianpur born

Gopinath Kallianpur (1925–2015) was an Indian American mathematician and statistician who became the first director of the Indian Statistical Institute (1976–79) under its new Memorandum of Association.

Indian Indologist and historian Ramachandra Dikshitar born

Ramachandra Dikshitar (16 April 1896 – 24 November 1953) was a historian, Indologist and a Dravidologist from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He was a professor of history and archaeology in the University of Madras and is the author of standard textbooks on Indian history.

1889 Charlie Chaplin born

Hollywood legend Charlie Chaplin is born Charles Spencer Chaplin in London, England. Charlie came into limelight during the era of silent film.  British comedian, writer director and composer Charlie is widely regarded as the greatest comic artist and one of the most important figures in motion graphics.

1917 Lenin returned from exile

Leader of the Bolshevik party, Vladimir Lenin returned to Petrograd, Russia, after a decade of exile, to take the reins of the Russian Revolution. Lenin’s interest in revolution came after his brother’s execution in 1887 for plotting to assassinate the Czar Alexandra II.

1947 Bernard Baruch coins the term ‘World War’

Multimillionaire and financier Bernard Baruch, in a speech given during the unveiling of his portrait in the South Carolina House of Representatives coins the term “Cold War” to describe relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. Bernard has served many important posts, he was one of the U.S Advisers at the Paris Peace Conference that ended World War I.

1947, 581 died in the Texas fertilizer explosion.

A giant explosion occurs during the loading of fertilizers onto the freighter Grand camp at a pier in Texas City, Texas. 581 people lost their lives and thousands were injured in this accident. The blast was heard 150 miles away and was so powerful that the ship’s 1.5- ton anchor was found two miles away. The force of the explosion lifted another ship right out of the water.
