A massive car bomb in the market town of Omagh, Northern Ireland, leaving at least 27 people dead and more than 100 injured.

1787 Composer Alexander Alyabyev

 

Russian composer was born.  He was known as one of the fathers of Russian art song. He wrote more than 200 songs, 20 musical comedies, 7 operas, etc.

1983 The U.S.A. Hurricane Alicia


Hurricane Alicia formed in the Gulf of Mexico hit the Texas Gulf Coast causing 21 deaths, thousands of injuries and billions of dollars in damages.

1871 Novelist Grazia Deledda

Italian the writer was born. She was best known for inspiring novels. She received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926.

1972 Israel Hijackers Life Sentence

 

In Israel, two Arab girls who helped hijack a Sabena Airlines plane of Belgian origin got a sentence of 25 years in prison.

1963 Cricketer Jack Russell

English retired international cricketer was born.  He is now known as an artist, cricket wicket keeping coach and a football goalkeeping coach.

1930 The US Hit by Drought

 

America was hit by one of the worst droughts ever seen which combined with the market crash leaves many hundreds of thousands without food and shelter.

1945 Actor Steve Martin

American actor, film director, producer and screenwriter were born. He earned 2 Academy Awards and 3 Golden Globe Awards.

India’s PM Manmohan Singh confirmed plans to launch a space probe that will orbit Mars, after press reports that the mission was scheduled to begin late next year.

Indian military chief officer and warrior was born. He was the army chief of the The Kingdom of Kittur and fought British East India Company till his death. A Kannada film was produced on his life history in 2012.

 

2010 Appeal to end protest


India’s PM Manmohan Singh appealed to the people of Indian-controlled Kashmir to end violent protests and said his government is ready to hold talks to resolve their long-standing problems.

1947 Actress Rakhee Gulzar

Indian film actress was born. He won 3 Film fare Awards and 1 National Film Award and many others.

2008 Riots in Kashmir

 

In India’s part of Kashmir, many Muslims took to the streets again, ignoring a the plea by the country’s prime minister for an end of violence that has left 34 people dead.

1872 Poet Sri Aurobindo

Indian philosopher, yogi, guru, poet, and nationalist was born.  He joined the Indian movement for independence from British rule.

2004 A bomb exploded during Parade

 

A bomb exploded during an Independence Day parade in Dhemaji, killing 18 people, including schoolchildren.

1975 Cricketer Vijay Bhardwaj

 

Former Indian cricketer was born.  He won Man of the Series award in One Day International Series. He was also the fielding coach.

1947 Independence Day

 

India gains independence from Great Britain after some 200 years of British rule.

1971 Singer Adnan Sami

 

Indian singer, musician, music composer, and pianist was born. He was awarded Padma Shri in January 2020.
