1893 Composer Lili Boulanger

 

The French composer was born. She was the first female winner of the Prix de Rome composition prize.  She also sang and played piano, cello, violin and harp.

1995 Michael Phelps 8 Gold Medals

Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529 crashed in Carroll County near Carrollton, Georgia, killing 9 of the 29 people on board after its left engine failed.

1937 Novelist Robert Stone

American novelist and journalist were born. He wrote many novels, short stories, memoirs and screenplays. He was the winner of the National Book Award.

1986 Cameroon Lethal Gas

 

Lethal gas from the volcanic Lake Nyos in Cameroon, West Africa killed every living the thing within a 15-mile radius including 1,500 people.

1935 Cricketer Ken Taylor

English former cricketer was born.  He was also a professional footballer and later a professional artist.

1959 The U.S.A. Hawaii


Hawaii becomes the 50th state in the United States.

1892 Actor Charles Vanel

French actor and director were born. He appeared in more than 200 films and received a Special Mention at the Cannes Film Festival in 1953.

1924 Russian Turkestan Earthquake

 

An earthquake occurred in the Oah area of Russian Turkestan that left 8,000 homeless and killed 41 people.

1938 Singer Pearl Bailey

 

American singer, songwriter, actor, record producer and entrepreneur was born. He was one of the best- selling music artists of all time.

Monsoon rains brought dozens of buildings crashing down and killing 74 people in Uttar Pradesh state. Monsoon season’s death toll to more than 300 people across India.

1978 Actress Bhumika Chawla

 

Indian actress and a former model. He worked in various Indian film industries and appeared in over 30 films in other languages.

2005 India, Bangladesh officials meet over disputed enclave

 

Bangladeshi and Indian border officials resolved a dispute over embankment building on a river cutting across their frontier that led to heavy firing by border troops.

1984 Actor Varun Sobti

Indian actor was born. He also appeared in short films, web series and the Voot Originals.

2003 Ecuador’s Protestors March


In Ecuador, some 1000 Indians and union workers marched through Quito, protesting the economic policies of President Lucio Gutierrez.

1961 Cricketer V.B. Chandrasekhar

Indian cricketer was born.  He established himself as a key player for Tamil Nadu. He was also a commentator and ran a cricket academy in Chennai.

2000 Kashmir guerrillas

In Kashmir Muslim guerrillas used booby traps killing 5 Indian soldiers, while Indian security forces killed 8 people believed to be part of the separatist movement.

1911 Writer Ismat Chughtai

 

Indian Urdu language novelist, short story writer, and the filmmaker were born. She received Padma Shri 1976.

1988 Earthquake on Nepal-India border

 

More than 1,000 people were killed in an earthquake on the Nepal-India border.

1981 Singer Kanika Kapoor

Indian singer was born.  She has received one Filmfare Award. She  earned several Best Playback Singer awards and nominations
