2009 – NSA Illegally Collected Emails

On August 22, 2009, NSA (National Security Agency) illegally collected tens of thousands of personal emails of US citizens. The emails had no links to suspected terrorists and the program was deemed illegal by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court in 2011.

2006 – Ukraine Flight Crash

On August 22, 2007, Pulkovo Aviation Enterprise Flight 612 crashed near the Russian border in Donetsk Oblast in Eastern Ukraine, killing all 170 people on board.

1999 – Hong Kong Plane Crash

On August 22, 1999, a passenger jet Flight CI642 attempting to land at Hong Kong’s new Chek Lap Kok airport in severe winds crashed causing the death of 2 people and severe injuries to 20.

1972 – Rhodesia Forced Out of Olympics

On August 22, 1972, Rhodesia was thrown out of the Olympic Games in the face of mounting international pressure and pressure from African nations who threatened to boycott the games.

On August 22, 1935, Annie Proulx, an American novelist, short story writer and journalist was born. She won PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction and many others.

Cricketer Bill Woodfull

On August 22, 1897, Bill Woodfull, an Australian cricketer was born. He captained both Victoria and Australia and trained as a schoolteacher. He was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year.

Actor James Corden

Born on August 22, 1978, James Corden, an English actor, comedian, writer, and television host was born. He won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play and the BAFTA Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year.

Singer Layne Staley

2017 – Triple talaq became unconstitutional

On August 22, 2017, India’s Supreme Court struck down “triple talaq” as unconstitutional. Triple Talaq was a Islam practice that allowed men to instantly divorce their wives by saying “I divorce you” three times.

2017 – McDonald’s announce to close 169 outlets in India

On August 22, 2017, McDonald’s India announced that 169 McDonald’s outlets are going to close in northern and eastern India after the American fast-food giant decided to terminate the franchise agreement with its Indian partner.

2013 – Rape by five men in Mumbai

On August 22, 2013, In India, a young photojournalist was repeatedly raped by five men in a deserted textile mill in Mumbai. One suspect was arrested the next day. On April 4, 2014, three were sentenced to death and 4th was sentenced to life in prison.

2012 – Bank employees on strike

On August 22, 2012, more than one million public sector bank employees started a two-day nationwide strike, protesting against reforms they feared could lead to mergers and job losses.

2011 – 40 Indian pilgrims died in road accident

On August 22, 2011, in northern India a flatbed trailer carrying pilgrims to a Hindu temple overturned and fell into a roadside pond, killing at least 40 people in Uttar Pradesh state.

Writer Harishankar Parsai

On August 22, 1924, Harishankar Parsai, an Indian writer was born. He was a noted satirist and humorist of modern Hindi literature and won Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982.

Cricketer Niel Walker

On August 22, 1895, Niel Walker, Indian cricketer and a British army officer was born. He played tournaments in India and for Derbyshire.

Singer Asa Singh Mastana
