On August 27, 2011, Hurricane Irene strikes the United States east coast, killing 47 people and causing an estimated $15.6 billion in damage.

2009 – New Dinosaur Species Discovered

On August 27, 2009, a new dinosaur species was discovered in Australia by palaeontologists on a sheep farm in Queensland. The fossils of the dinosaur are estimated to be around 97 million years old and belong to a herbivore sauropod.

2006 – Kentucky Plane Crash

On August 27, 2006, a Comair CRJ-100 passenger jet carrying 50 people was crashed shortly after taking off from Lexington airport in Kentucky.

1979 – Ireland Bomb Attack

On August 27, 1979, 18 British soldiers from the Second Battalion Parachute Regiment was killed by two booby trap bomb attacks at Warrenpoint, South Down, in Northern Ireland.

1881 – The Georgia Hurricane 

On August 27, 1881, the Georgia hurricane made the landfall recording estimated wind to be at least about 100 or so miles per hour, near Savannah, Georgia, resulting in an estimated death of 700 people.

2008 – Shoot at sight order to end violence in Odisha

On August 27, 2008, Indian police were ordered to shoot on sight to end Hindu-Christian clashes in parts of eastern Odisha state when a hardline Hindu holy leader and four other people were shot dead by unknown assailants.

On August 27, 2006, in western India, a water tank collapsed in a Bharatpur town fair, killing 45 people who had climbed on top of it to watch a wrestling match.

2003 – Dozens Killed at Indian religious festival

On August 27, 2003, In India’s Nasik, thousands of Hindu pilgrims struggling to reach a river for a religious festival toppled a bamboo fence, sparking a stampede, killing at least 39 people, mostly women and injuring at least 125 people.
