Events

1997 – Rioting occurs in Londonlondon riot

On August 7, 1997, Rioting began in Tottenham near London during which residents attacked people, set fire to shops, and looted the neighbourhood which continued for several days. The original rioting began as residents protested the shooting of a man by police in the area.

2006 – Chilli Coppers Workers Strike

On August 7, 2006, 2,000 workers at the largest private copper mine in the world, in Escondida, Chile went on strike with the demand to increase 13% in pay.

1998 – Africa US Embassy Bombed

On August 7, 1998, the Islamic fundamentalist terrorist organization al-Qaeda (run by Osama bin Laden) was believed to be responsible for the bombings of two United States Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar-es-Salaam Tanzania where at least 200 people were killed and more than 5,000 people were injured.

1959 – Space Explorer 6 launched

On August 7, 1959, Explorer 6 was launched hoping to take the first satellite photographs of Earth from an unmanned spacecraft Explorer 6.

1955 – Japan’s first Transistor Radio

On August 7, 1955, Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering began selling Sony TR-55, Japan’s first commercially produced transistor radio.

On August 7, 317, Constantius, a Roman Emperor was born. His rule saw constant warfare on the borders, while internally the Roman Empire went through repeated civil wars.

Composer Karel Husa

On August 7, 1940, Karel Husa, a Czech-born classical composer and conductor was born. He won Pulitzer Prize for Music and Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition.

Author Garrison Keillor

On August 7, 1942, Garrison Keillor, an American author, voice actor, storyteller, humorist and radio personality was born. He received a Peabody Award in 1980.

Cricketer Dominic Cork

On August 7, 1971, Dominic Cork, a former English county and international cricketer was born. He was an all-rounder and was chosen as one of the five Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1996.

Actor John Glover

Born on August 7, 1960, David Duchovny an American actor, writer, producer, director, novelist, and singer-songwriter was born. He has appeared in many films and television series. He has written 3 novels and released his music.

2015 – Building collapsed in Haryana

On August 7, 2015, a building wall collapsed while being constructed, killing 10 workers near Narnaul, Haryana state.

2011 – Soldier and policeman arrested over death in Kashmir

On August 7, 2011, a soldier and the police officer were arrested and investigated for murder. Indian army and police claimed they killed a Pakistani commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba militants during a gunbattle in Poonch region of Kashmir. Later, it was found that the dead man was a local Hindu resident and mentally unsound.

2007 – Hunger in Bangladesh

On August 7, 2007, the toll from severe floods across South Asia soared to nearly 1,900 and although water levels in the region’s swollen rivers started to recede, millions of people in Bangladesh, India still faced hunger.

2007 – Indian communists reject U.S. nuclear pact

On August 7, 2007, Indian communist parties rejected a landmark nuclear pact between New Delhi and Washington saying it compromised India’s jurisdiction and imposed US influence.

2005 – Blew up an oil pipeline

On August 7, 2005, In India’s northeast Assam state suspected separatist rebels blew up a crucial oil pipeline and nearby homes, shutting down operations.

On August 7, 1702, Muhammad Shah, a Mughal Emperor was born. He was an excellent patron of the humanities, including musical, cultural and administrative developments.

Actress Malavika Mohana

On August 7, 1994, Malavika Mohana, an Indian Film actress was born. She mainly worked in the Malayalam films and also appeared in several Hindi, Kannada and Tamil films.

Composer Rabindranath Tagore

On August 7, 1861, Rabindranath Tagore, a Bengali poet, writer, music composer, and painter was born. His novels, stories, essays, songs and dance-dramas spoke to topics political and personal. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.

Cricketer Anisa Mohammed

On August 7, 1988, Anisa Mohammed, a Trinidadian cricketer was born. She was also the first bowler for the West Indies to take 100 wickets in Women’s One Day International Match and to take a hat-trick in a Women’s Twenty20 International match.

Singer Suresh Wadkar

On August 7, 1954, Suresh Wadkar, an Indian playback singer was born. He mainly performs in Hindi and Marathi films and also sang songs in some Bhojpuri films, Odia albums and bhajans and Konkani films.
