2015 – Shooting in Harris Country

On August 8, 2015, a mass shooting occurred inside a house in northern Harris County, Texas, near Houston. 8 people were killed during the incident.

2010 – Flood in China

On August 8, 2010, a mudslide occurred in Zhugqu County, Gansu, China that killed more than 1,400 people.

1991 – Warsaw Radio Mast collapsed 

On August 8, 1991, The Warsaw radio mast, the tallest construction ever built collapses during the repairing of cables and lofty wind, the whole thing bent in two.

1949 – Earthquake in Ecuador

On August 8, 1949, Ecuador was rocked by a devastating earthquake of magnitude 6.4, killing 4,600 people and doing an estimated 20 million dollars damage.

Composer Benny Carter

On August 8, 1907, Benny Carter, an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader was born.  He was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987.

Writer Shirley Jackson

On August 8, 1916, Shirley Jackson, an American writer was born. She was mainly known for her works of horror and mystery. She composed 6 novels and more than 200 short stories.

Cricketer Jack Ryder

On August 8, 1889, Jack Ryder, an Australian cricketer was born. He was an all-rounder and claimed 612 wickets and scored 12,677 runs in 338 district matches.

Actor John Glover

Born on August 8, 1922, Rory Calhoun, an American film and television actor, screenwriter and producer was born. He was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame with two stars in 1960.

Events

2015 – Five women accused of Witchcraft Beaten to Death in Jharkhand

On August 8, 2015, in eastern India dozens of villagers beat to death 5 women, accusing them of practising witchcraft and blaming them for misfortunes in Kinjia village, Jharkhand state. Police arrested around 50 people involved in the attack.

2012 – Strike forces India’s Kingfisher to cancel flights

On August 8, 2012, India’s struggling Kingfisher Airlines was forced to cancel more than 30 flights after pilots and engineers refused to show up for work because of unpaid salaries.

2003 – Thunderstorm in Himachal Pradesh

On August 8, 2003, workers camped out at a mountain tunnel were hit by a fierce overnight thunderstorm near a Himalayan resort in Himachal Pradesh state, leaving at least 26  people dead.

2000 – Indian monsoon damages

On August 8, 2000, in northeast India flash floods and mudslides left at least 80 people dead and 2 million homeless.

1942 – Quit India Movement Launched

On August 8, 1942, Quit India Movement was launched in India against the British rule in response to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s call for swaraj or complete independence.

Actress Surveen Chawla

On August 8, 1984, Surveen Chawla, an Indian film actress and dancer was born. She started her career with television soap and ended up appearing in the films.

Writer Bhisham Sahni

On August 8, 1915, Bhisham Sahni, a Hindi writer, playwright, and actor was born. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan for literature in 1998.

Cricketer Dilip Sardesai

On August 8, 1940, Dilip Sardesai, an Indian international cricketer was born. He was often regarded as one of India’s best batsmen against spin.

Vocalist Raza Ali Khan
