Labour Day celebrates the workers all over the world
May 1 is celebrated is Labour Day dedicated to workers all over the world. The day is also known as May Day, International Workers day depending upon the countries and continents. Labour day is celebrated to honor the working class and laborers.
In India labour day has some local name; Such as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas, Kamgar Din, Uzhaipalar Dinam & Kamgar Din. The name be different for ‘May Day’ but the theme is similar all over the world to celebrate the holiday for achievements for workers.
Why It is Celebrated?
US activists organized a national strike in Chicago’s Haymarket Square (US) to get 8-hour work-shift, Paid leave and reasonable pay for the workers. Labour union rose up against the unjust of working conditions. Thousands of Laborers came to support the protest. The protest was peaceful till someone threw a bomb at police. Eight people were killed in the explosion and 8 radical labour activist were convicted.
There is another theory on why is this celebrated? It is said that the International Socialist Conference designated May 1 for laborers after a meeting in 1889 to honor the workers in the Haymarket riots.
Irony: Originated in the US, American celebrate it on first Monday of September
Although, International Workers day originated in the United States the people of America celebrate it on first Monday of September every year.
In India, it was first celebrated in 1923 in Madras (Now known as Chennai). The Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan was the first party to celebrate labour day in independent India in Marina Beach of Chennai. Red Flag was first used on this day which is now synonymous with Mayday in India.
