December 14 marks the Death Anniversary of George Washington 

WHO WAS GEORGE WASHINGTON AND WHY IS HE KNOWN AS THE FATHER OF THE UNITED STATES?


George Washington was the first President of the United States who served two terms, 30th April 1787 to 4th March 1797. He was a political leader, an American statesman and a military general (Commander in Chief of the continental army).

ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON

George Washington was born in 1732 on the 22nd of February in Virginia, which at that time was a British-ruled colony. During his earlier years, he worked as a surveyor who examined the condition of land and buildings. Later, he fought as a soldier in the French and India War (1754-1763), but later returned to Virginia to work as a farmer.

ABOUT HIS FAMILY

George Washington was the son of a landowner and a prosperous farmer, Augustine Washington. His mother was Mary Ball Washington who was the second wife of Augustine. His siblings were Lawrence Washington who was an American soldier and a politician, John Augustine Washington who was the third son of Mary Ball and Augustine Washington, Samuel Washington who was a politician and an American officer, Charles Washington who was George Washington’s youngest brother and Augustine Washington Jr. who was his half-brother. He also had a sister named Betty Washington Lewis. George Washington’s father passed away when George was just 11 and thus, his brother Lawrence Washington had to help raise him.

HIS JOURNEY TOWARDS PRESIDENTSHIP

Washington led the colonial forces and returned as a National Hero. Just when he was 26, the residents of Virginia elected him into the colonial legislature. During the British rule, George Washington raised his voice against the unfair laws made by them and also strongly opposed the system of the high taxes by the British government. George Washington formed a leading army to oppose the British rule and when the British surrendered in 1781 at Yorktown, he was known as a hero by all who helped various colonies gain their independence. Later in 1787, George Washington was elected as the President of a convention that wrote the U.S. Constitution following which he became the first President of America just two years later. GEORGE WASHINGTON’S DEATH

George Washington retired from presidentship in 1796 after serving  two  terms .He refused to serve a third term. In George Washington’s farewell address, he urged his fellow countrymen to maintain a high domestic standard and to keep their involvement with the foreign affairs to the minimum. His farewell address is still read each year on the 22nd of February in honor of his birthday. After his retirement he returned to Mount Vernon and decided to give his utmost attention to his plantations. On 14th December 1799, at the age of 67, George Washington took his last breath. After his death he was entombed at Mount Vernon, which in 1960 was designated as a  National Historic landmark.

CONCLUSION

George Washington left behind him the greatest legacy of all the times for the United States of America, and thus, he is known as ‘The Father of America’ and his picture is printed on the currency of United States and the capital city of America is also named after him.
