1920 Pandit Ravi Shankar was born

Pandit Ravi Shankar, one of the greatest sitar players, was born on this day. Born Ravindra Shankar Chowdhury in Benares (Varanasi) to a family of Bengali Brahmins originally from East Bengal (now Bangladesh), he was the youngest of five sons. His father, Shyam Shankar Choudhury, was the diwan of Jhalawar, a princely state in Rajasthan, and a scholar of Sanskrit.

1935 Shankar Abaji Bhise a famous Indian Scientist died. He has developed more than 200 inventions and for 40 of which he took patents.

1934 Gandhi ji suspended Civil Disobedient movement.

1942 Jeetendra was born

is an Indian actor, TV and film producer as chairman of the Balaji Telefilms, Balaji Motion Pictures and ALT Entertainment. Famous for his dancing, he was awarded a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 and the Screen Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.

Events happened globally this day

1862 Battle of Shiloh ended

Two days fight near Pittsburgh concluded. The battle of Shiloh became one of the bloodiest engagements of the war.

1933 Enforcement of Anti-Jewish Law

The government passed the “law for the restoration of the professional civil services” which seemed a deliberate attempt to suppress the Jews. The law stripped off the power of Jewish people especially those who were in government jobs.

1939 Albania Captured by Italy

Under the guidance of Mussolini. Italy troops manage to successfully capture Albania.

1945 Yamato Sunk by allied forces

One of the greatest battleships of that time in the world is sunk in Japan’s first major counteroffensive in the struggle of Okinawa. Weighting 72,800 tons and equipped with Nine 18.1- inch guns. This ship was the only hope for Japan to eliminate the Allied fleet off the coast of Okinawa.

19 American aerial Torpedoes struck Yamato and it was sunk, drowning 2498 of its crew.

1948 Establishment of WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) This branch and its guidelines were enforced on this day and since then WHO is working on the health and better life for people all over the world.

1954 “Domino Theory” speech delivered

President Dwight D. Eisenhower invents one of the famous cold war phrases when he suggests that the fall of French Indochina to the communists could create a ‘Domino’ effect in Southeast Asia. This theory dominates the US thinking about Vietnam for the next decade.

1961 JFK lobbies Congress to save historical sites in Egypt

President Johan F. Kennedy sends a letter to Congress recommending the US participation in an international campaign to preserve the historical monuments and ancient temples in Egypt. The initiative was taken by the UNESCO, to save the sites threatened by the construction of the Aswan dam.

1983 Famous Spacewalk

NASA launched sixth space shuttle and on this date astronauts Story Musgrave and his colleague did a historic spacewalk

1994 Communal Violence in Rwanda

Violence erupted in Rwanda which later turned the worst genocide after the world war II. The massacre of an estimated 50,000 to 1 million innocent Tutsis and moderate Hutus (Two different communities in Rwanda). Tutsis a minority group that made up only 10% of the total Rwanda population. In this event, 10 Belgian peacekeeping officers were also killed by Rwanda forces, which led to the withdrawal of U.N forces from Rwanda.

2018 Suspected Gas attack

Suspected gas attack on Douma by Syrian government air force kills more than 40 people and more than 500 were injured.
