History of December 10:  Theme of Human Rights Day 2020 is – ‘Stand up for Human Rights’


Human Rights are inalienable and universal rights that every human being is entitled to since birth.  Human Rights are not privileges, they are the basic right of every human being. Despite that, they are violated every day in one or another way. To protect the basic rights of every individual, Human Rights Day was established in the year 1948.

This year’s Human Right’s Day falls at a time we will always recollect. Every year Human Rights Day is observed on the 10th of December. On this day, in the year 1948, the United Nations General Assembly accepted The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, under the chairpersonship of the then Lady of the HouseMiss Eleanour Roosevelt; which revolves around the empowerment of the fundamental civil rights of individuals.

Few Interesting Facts about this day:

The United Nations General Assembly was the first and foremost organization to make Human Rights their chief objective. Notably,  the objective was to reaffirm faith in fundamental Human Rights and encourage the promotion of basic Human Rights through numerous platforms.

The year 2020 marks as the 71st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Along with raising awareness about the same, they have made an omnipotent call with Stand Up for Human Rights’ as their slogan. The committee of the United Nations General Assembly consists of various representatives from diverse backgrounds and people from different cultures, races’ and religions from all around the globe.

Why it was called the greatest commitment that any country could make?

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was the greatest commitment any country could ever make. Every individual, regardless of the county they belong to deserves to be aware of their basic fundamentals of human rights.

The law to safeguard human rights was brought into force in India in the September of 1993 following which a National Human Rights Commission was established with the rudimentary task of making maximum people aware of their entitled rights. Each year on the International Human Rights Day various conferences and meetings are held all across the world to celebrate and make the population aware of their rights and also to prioritize the human rights of every person globally.

 Now, how can we as the people of a democratic country celebrate Human Rights Day in the most appropriate way? Well, the answer is very simple; to strive for a better world and to make a difference you must always start from yourself. Take a brief look around yourself and observe your environment, take a stand against any form of injustice taking place, you can also make little donations and provide care packages to the underprivileged. Looking out for little things like these may not seem great at the moment but it sure will make a huge difference for the future generations.
