Events

2008 – Japan Earthquake

On July 23, 2008, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 hit Japan. It caused landslides, power outages, fires, and injuries.

1995 – Comet Hale-Bopp discovered 

On July 23, 1995, Comet Hale-Bopp is discovered and becomes visible to the naked eye nearly a year later.

1976 – First Cases Legionnaires Disease

On July 23, 1976, 4,000 delegates from the Pennsylvania chapter of the American Legion met at the Hotel in Philadelphia for a gathering. After several days, 22 people were dead and hundreds were experienced pneumonia-like symptoms. The cause was traced back to an aquatic microorganism bacteria at the hotel and the disease was later called Legionnaires disease.

1944 – IMF operations begin

On July 23, 1944, the delegates signed the Bretton Woods agreement. They set up a system of rules, institutions, and procedures to regulate the international monetary system.

1840 – Union Act passed by the British Parliament

On July 23, 1840, Union Act was passed by the British Parliament to unite Upper & Lower Canada.

Emperor Haile Selassie

On July 23, 1892, Haile Selassie, an Ethiopia’s regent from 1916 to 1930 and Emperor from 1930 to 1974, was born. He is esteemed as the returned messiah of the Bible, God incarnate.

Composer Ben Weber

On July 23, 1916, Ben Weber, an American composer was born. He was awarded Thorne Music Award in 1965. He was one of the first Americans to take up the 12-tone techniques of Schoenberg. 

Novelist Raymond Chandler 

On July 23, 1888, Raymond Thorton Chandler, an American novelist, and screenwriter was born. His three masterpieces novels were ‘Farewell, My Lovely’, ‘The Little Sister’ and ‘The Long Goodbye’.

Cricketer Graham Gooch

Born on July 23, 1953, Graham Gooch, an English first-class cricketer was born. He was the caption of England and an opening batsman. He is one of only 25 players to hit over 100 first-class centuries.

Actor Daniel Radcliffe

Born on July 23, 1989, Daniel Radcliffe, an English Actor and producer was born. He appeared for the role of Harry Potter in the movie based on the books by J.K. Rowling.

2007 – Snipers attack

On July 23, 2007, Indian officials found dozens of plastic bags stuffed with body parts in an abandoned well in eastern India. They believed to be from aborted female fetuses or newborn girls killed because their families wanted boys. 

2006 – Police raided in Andhra Pradesh

On July 23, 2006, Police in India raided a forest hideout for communist rebels in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh state, killing Burra Chinnaiah, a guerrilla chief, and at least 7 other people.

2001 – Flood in India

On July 23, 2001, flooding in India’s Orissa state killed some 83 people and leftover 600,000 stranded.

1927, First Indian Broadcasting Company on Air

On July 23, 1927, the first station of the Indian Broadcasting Company goes on the air in Bombay, India.

1874 – Aires de Ornelas appointed as Archbishop

On July 23, 1874, Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos was appointed as the Archbishop of the Portuguese colonial enclave of Goa, India.

Activist Chandra Shekhar Azad

On July 23, 1906, Chandra Shekhar Azad, an Indian revolutionary was born. He reorganized the Hindustan Republican Association under its new name of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA).

Lawyer Bal Gangadhar Tilak

On July 23, 1856, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, an Indian nationalist, teacher, lawyer, and an independence activist was born. He was the first and strongest advocates of Swaraj.
