Indian Politician Puchalapalli Sundarayya born

On May 1, 1913, Puchalapalli Sundarayya was born in Nellore Andhra Pradesh. He was the founding member of the Indian Communist Party and the leader of the peasant revolt in Hyderabad. For the purpose of social service and to uplift the poor he and his spouse choose not to have a child, this shows how determined and dedicated he was for his cause of uplifting the poor.

Anushka Sharma

Born on May 1, 1988, Anushka is an Indian actress and film producer who works in Hindi films. She is one of the most popular and highest-paid actresses in India. She made her debut with Shahrukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, one of the successful romantic hit.  She got good recognition from this movie which also earned her a Film Fare award.

Anand Gopal Mahindra born

On May 1, 1955, Anand Gopal Born was born in Mumbai Maharashtra. He is the Chairman of Mahindra Group, a Mumbai-based business conglomerate. The group operates in the aerospace, agribusiness, aftermarket, automotive, components, construction equipment, defence, energy, farm equipment, finance and insurance. In 2013, Forbes noted him as the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’

1863 Battle of Chancellorsville begins

On May 1, 1863, General Joseph Hooker led the army of the Potomac into Virginia to confront Robert E. Lee’s Army of North Virginia that resulted in the beginning of the Battle of Chancellorsville.

1989 in Manila Bay Battle the USA destroys Spanish fleet

The U.S Asiatic squadron destroyed the Spanish Pacific fleet in the first combat of the Spanish-American war at Manila Bay in the Philippines. In this confrontation, 10 Spanish ships were destroyed or captured and almost 400 Spanish sailors were killed. Whereas, America had only six soldiers wounded.

1931 Empire state building dedicated

President Herbert Hoover on May 1, 1931, officially declares New York City’s state-building. With 102 stories and 1,250 feet high (1,454 feet to the top of the lightning rod), was the world’s tallest skyscraper.

1972 Cesar Chavez begins a hunger strike

Mexican American labour organizer and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez starts a hunger strike. He started this strike in opposition to an Arizona law severely restricting farmworkers’ ability to organize. It lasted 24 days and drew national attention to the suffering of itinerant farmworkers in the Southwest.

1997 labour party returns in power in Britain

British labour party, led by Tony Blair, got massive support from the British voters. The labour party got a landslide victory in British Parliamentary elections after 18 years of conservative rule.
