Leela Samson

German soldiers start sacking Rome. Thousands were killed, libraries were destroyed and captured the Pope.

In the battle of Ghaghra, India Babur defeats the Afghan chiefs.

English Channel tunnel opens

The rail tunnel under the English Channel was officially opened. It was connecting Britain and the European mainland for the first time since the Ice Age. A ceremony presided by England’s Queen Elizabeth II and French President Francois Mitterrand was organized. It is the world’s longest underwater tunnel 23 miles long. The American Society of Civil Engineers identified the tunnel as one of the seven wonders of the modern world in 1996.

1942 American Forces surrendered in the Philippines

The U.S. troops in the Philippines surrendered to the Japanese. U.S. Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright surrenders all his troops. After the Japanese victory at Bataan, the island of Corregidor remained the last Allied stronghold.

1960 Civil Rights act signed

On May 6, 1960, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1960.
