Bengali Philosopher Rabindranath Tagore birth

One of the most renowned Indian philosopher Rabindranath Tagore is born on May 7, 1861, in Kolkata, West Bengal. When Tagore was eight years old, he started writing poetry. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India’s Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh’s Amar Shonar Bangla. In 1913, he became the first non-European to win Noble Prize in literature.

N. S. Hardikar

Born on May 7, 1889, N.S Hardikar was an Indian Freedom fighter and Congress politician. Hardikar has founded the Congress Seva Dal.

M. Hiriyanna born

One of the Indian prominent philosopher and Sanskrit scholar, M. Hiriyanna was born on May 7, 1871, in Mysore, Karnataka. He has served as a Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Mysore and a contemporary of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Amyra Dastur

Born on May 7, 1993, Amyra Dastur is an Indian film actress, she has worked mainly in Hindi films, however, she was starred in some Tamil and Telugu films. She made her debut with Issaq in Bollywood, opposite Prateik Babbar.

1763 Ottawa rebellion against British begins

On May 7, 1763, Indian chief Pontiac’s Rebellion starts when a confederacy of Native American Warriors attacks British force of Detroit under Ottawa chief Pontiac.

1896 Serial Killer HH Holmes hanged in Philadelphia

One of America’s well-known serial killer H.H Holmes is hanged to death in Philadelphia. As per reports remains of 200 victims were recovered in his procession.

German submarine sinks Lusitania

A German U Boat torpedoes the passenger ship Lusitania, a British ocean liner en route from New York to Liverpool, sinks her in 21 minutes. There were 1978 people on board including women and children. Germany justified the attack by saying Lusitania was an enemy ship.

1945 German surrendered to Allies

On May 7, 1945, the German high command signed an unconditional surrender of German forces. General Alfred Jodl who signed the unconditional surrender document, firstly tried to limit the surrender to only those forces still fighting the western Allies. However, he was demanded to surrender all forces, those who were fighting in the west as well as in the east. With the surrender, there was an end to World war II in Europe.

1954 French forces surrendered to the Vietminh at Dien Bien Phu.

On May 7, 1954, Ho Chi Minh’s Viet Minh forces defeat French forces at Dien Dien Phu. Dien Dien Phu was a French stronghold besieged by Vietnamese communists.

Leonid Brezhnev elected president

On May 7, 1960, Leonid Brezhnev becomes the President of The Soviet Union.
