1977 – Indira Gandhi Arrested in India

Indira Gandhi was an Indian politician and an advocate of the Indian National Congress. She is known as the first and, to date, only female Prime Minister of India. On 3rd October 1977, she got arrested on the charges of the Jeep scam (Corruption). Although it was revealed that there is no evidence against her and this political mistake of the Janata Party is called ‘Operation Blunder’ in Indian history.

1978 – First Test Tube Baby of India

Subhash Mukhopadhyay was an Indian scientist, physician from Jharkhand, India. He created the world’s second and India’s first child using Vitro fertilization. The girl’s name is Kanupriya Agarwal and she was born on 3rd October 1978, just 67 days after the first IVF baby in the United Kingdom.

1923 – Death Anniversary of Kadambini Ganguly 

Kadambini Ganguly along with Anandibai Joshi was one of the first two female physicians from India. She was also the first Indian female to practice western medicine and the first to attend college in India.

International Events

1932 –  Independence Day of Iraq

From the end of the First World War, Iraq was considered a part of the Ottoman Empire. When the Ottoman rule finally collapsed, Britain took control of Iraq and named it the ‘State of Iraq.’ On October 3rd, 1932, Iraq was granted its independence by Britain and was admitted to the League of Nations under the monarch of King Faisal. The monarchy lasted until 1958 when the 14 July Revolution led to Iraq becoming a republic.

1952 – 3rd Nuclear Test of the United Kingdom 

(Operation Hurricane)

On 3 October 1952, the United Kingdom turned into the third nation to test atomic weapons after the United States and the Soviet Union. The primary British test, code-named ‘Hurricane’, was directed at the Montebello Islands in Western Australia. The United Kingdom had set out on its own nuclear weapons program in 1947.
