Padma Awards: Know its importance & History
Padma Awards are one of the highest honors announced annually to the Indians for exceptional service on the eve of Republic Day. There are three categories of this award namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shree. The medals are given to people from different fields of activities, like art, social work, public affair, trade and industry, medical, literature and education, sports etc.
These awards are granted by the President of India at the eve of the ceremonial function of Republic Day, held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. This year President of India approved 112 conferrees of Padma Awards. The list includes 4 Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shree Awards. Among the awardees 21 are women, 11 persons belong from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, 3 Posthumous and 1 transgender person.
Padma Vibhushan – This award is presented to the ones, whose work is exceptional and distinguished services in any field including services rendered by Government servants.
Padma Bhushan – The awardee of this award renders some distinguished service of high order in any field, including services rendered by government service.
Padma Shree – The award is presented to the ones whose service is distinguishable in any field including service rendered by government servants.
Meaning
The meaning of the term ‘Padma’ is ‘Lotus’. The practice of conferring Padma Awards started from the year 1954 to grant awards to the citizen of India for their extraordinary services in various fields like art, literature, science, education, sports, medicine and many more.
