Important facts about Quit India Movement


The Quit India Movement was launched during world war 2 in August 1942-49 with a demand to end British rule. It was launched in parts of Bombay. It began with an aim to end British rule. Mahatma Gandhi played an important role in it. He was a part of many struggles and in many speeches, he raised his voice. Mahatma Gandhi made a call to do or die in his Quit India speech in Bombay.

TIMELINE AND HAPPENINGS of Quit India Movement

  1. In 1939, Indian nationalists were angry that British Governor-General of India, Lord Linlithgow had brought India into the war without consultation with them.   During the Wardha meeting party had faced fascism but were rebuffed when they asked for Independence.
  2. There was an outbreak of war between Germany and Britaindue to factors being responsible for the launch of war..India became a constituent part of the British empire.  A resolution was passed that India could not associate itself with war unless it was consulted firstOn 17thOctober the viceroy claimed that Britain is waging a war driven with the intention of strengthening peace in the world in response to this declaration.
  3. Opposition to the Quit India Movement: Hindu Mahasabha-Hindu parties were up to boycotting the quit India movement. Following the decision of Hindu Mahasabha to boycott the Quit India Movement, Syama Prasad Mukherjee, leader of the Hindu Mahasabha in Bengal, wrote a letter to the British Government as to how they should respond, if the Congress gave a call to the British rulers to quit India.
  4. No support to the Quit India movement:RSS had kept aloof from congress led anti -British Indian independence movement since its founding by K.B. Hedgewar in 1925. RSS refused to join the quit India movement in 1947.
  5. Local violence-the agitated local parties attacked 550 postoffices, 250 railway stations, damaged many rail lines, destroyed 70 police stations, and burned or damaged 85 other government buildings. Bihar faced the greatest level of violence. There were 2500 around wired that got cut by the violent people during the war.
  6. Besides the quit India movement and in that Mahatma Gandhi also supported khadi and the abolition of untouchability. He warred campaigns and struggles that Britisher also exploited the poor and that they should rather leave the country.
