The UGC academic session 2020-21 starts from August this year: UGC recommendation committee

Online mode for practical as well as Viva-Voice exams has been mentioned in the report


Schools, colleges and universities across the country are closed since March 16 after PM announced a complete nationwide classroom shutdown as a measure to stop the spread. As we know that PM also announced a nationwide lockdown as well.

Following the losses in the education sector University grants commission has recommended that the academic session 2020-21 should commence from august. The decision was taken following the recommendations of the committee on examinations; formed on 06 April.

Recommendations

The committee in its brief report said that the fresh and old admissions shall commence from 1.8.2020- 11.9.2020. It said in its recommendations that the education sector has suffered a huge loss due to the COVID 19 pandemic and it necessary to resume the academic year as soon as possible. But as we know it is not possible to resume the session now.

The committee added that the classes for the second year and third year will also start from August. However, the fresh batch will begin from 1st September. The report also said that the examinations for the session will be conducted next year in the month of January.

The committee has also suggested that the classes for even semester, will commence from January 27, 2021, and go on till May 25. Examination for the same should be conducted in the last week of May 2021, and hence, summer vacations will be in the month of July.

The committee in its report has said that regarding the minimum required percentage the lockdown period shall be considered attended by the students or research scholars.

Following the committee’s report, the universities have been guided to switch to online mode for practical examinations and Viva-Voice. The recommendations said that Skype and other meetings apps shall be used to conduct such exams and incase of intermediate classes the practical exams should be conducted during the ensuing semesters.

The UGC had constituted a committee for the recommendations for the academic calendar and examinations. The committee was headed by the former VC of central university of Haryana; KC Kuhad. The committee was formed on April 06 on the directions of UGC.
