11 July marks World Population Day 2019: Theme, History and Importance
11 July is seen as World Population Day 2019. This day is meant to spread awareness among people and find solutions for population issues. The rising population has become a big concern since the last few decades. The present population of the world is 7.7 billion as of April 2019. 82 Million People will be added to the current population every year if the population growth remains the same. Population management is the primary agenda of this World Population Day.
In 1989, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) declared that 11 July of every year will be seen as World Population Day. This was introduced in the interest of the public when the global population reached around 5 billion in 1987.
In 2012, it was recognized that around 1.8 billion youngsters enter the reproductive age every year. Hence, the theme and message of World Population Day 2012 were to provide “Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services”. Several events, camps and campaigns are organized all over the world, every year to create awareness on population issues like importance of family planning, maternal and baby health, poverty, human rights, right to health, sex education, gender equality. It also includes awareness programs on reproductive health, adolescent pregnancy, promoting the use of contraceptives like condoms, safe sex, girl child education, STDs, and so many.
The goal of World Population Day is not just to control population growth. The day focuses to ensure quality in human resource development which is always the agenda of sustainable development.
The theme of World Population Day 2019
Every year, the UN Council gives a theme for World Population Day but this year no specific theme is decided. It only calls for global attention to the unfinished business of the 1994 International Conference. The UN conference with 179 members aimed to create awareness on reproductive health and gender equality. It considers very essentially for achieving sustainable development.
The UN Secretary, Antonio Guterres said – “The mission of World Population day is closely related to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable development.”
Why Population Growth is such a big concern?
Earth has limited resources to share. As the population increases, the exploitation of resources will also increase. The rapid urbanization and modernization have added more to the basic requirements for living. If the rate of the population remains increasing, a section of the population will always have to compromise will lower quality of life. The basic idea of Sustainable development is to strike a balance between our needs and resource consumption so that the future generation can get an equal share of resources. If the rate of population growth increases with this pace, every upcoming generation will see a degraded in their quality of life. Hence, population growth is a major concern in contemporary.
