1305 – Scottish Patriot was hanged
Scottish patriot William Wallace was hanged, drawn, beheaded, and quartered in London.
1541 – Cartier community
Jacques Cartier landed near Quebec on his third voyage to North America and established a short-lived community there.
1553 – Admiral beheaded
John Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland, English Lord Admiral, premier (1551-53), was beheaded on Tower Hill in front of 10,000 onlookers.
1775 – Refusal of American Colonies
Britain’s King George III refused the American colonies’ offer of peace and proclaimed the American colonies in a state of “open and avowed rebellion.”
1784 – Eastern Tennessee named Franklin
Eastern Tennessee settlers declared their area an independent state and named it Franklin; a year later the Continental Congress rejected it.

2005 – Building Collapsed in Mumbai
On August 23, 2005, In India an apartment building collapse in downtown Bombay killed 11 people, injured 17 and left more than a dozen trapped under the rubble.
2006 – Truck overturned due to monsoon
On August 23, 2006, in western India 17 people were killed when a truck overturned and fell into a deep ditch. Victims were sitting on top of sacks of salt that the truck was transporting when it overturned into a ditch flooded from recent monsoon rains.
