2013 – India’s food-for-poor Scheme

On August 26, 2013, India’s parliament passed a flagship 18-billion-dollar program to provide subsidized food to the poor that is intended to wipe out endemic hunger and malnutrition.

2008 – Religious violence in Odisha

On August 26, 2008, Christians clashed with Hindu mobs who attacked churches, and 8 people died in the violence in Kandhamal district of Odisha state.

2005 – Rally in Amritsar due to Sarabjeet Singh Death

On August 26, 2005, In India, nearly 5,000 people held a rally as shops and businesses were shut down in Amritsar.  Notably,  the hometown of Sarabjeet Singh facing death by hanging in Pakistan for allegedly spying.

2005 – Plastic Bags ban in Maharashtra

On August 26, 2007, Maharashtra the government planned to ban most plastic bags, blaming them for choking drains and causing floods a month ago that left more than 1,000 people dead.

2004 – Bomb Blasts in Assam State

On August 26, 2004, a passenger bus and another carrying paramilitary soldier and their families were blown up in separate explosions in the insurgency-wracked Assam state, killing 4 people and wounding 39 others.

Births – Indian

Mother Teresa

On August 26, 1910, Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu, commonly known as Mother Teresa, an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary was born. She was honoured in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. She received several honours including Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Actress Neeru Bajwa

On August 26, 1980, Neeru Bajwa, a Canadian-born Indian actress, director and producer was born. She appeared in Punjabi as well as Hindi films and television serials.

Writer Acharya Chatursen Shastri

On August 26, 1891, Acharya Chatursen Shastri, an Indian writer of Hindi literature was born. He wrote many historical novels, fictions, essays on political, health and medicine subjects.

Cricketer Sony Cheruvathur

On August 26, 1979, Sony Cheruvathur, an Indian first-class cricketer was born. He was also the captain of Kerala cricket team at Ranji Trophy cricket tournament.

Singer Tony Brent

On August 26, 1927, Tony Brent, an Indian-born British traditional pop music singer was born. He scored seven Top 20 chart hits in the UK.

2007 – Greece Multiple Forest Fires

On August 26, 2007, the country of Greece declared a state of emergency due to multiple forest fires. Over 200 forests continued to burn.

2005 – Fire in Paris Hostel

On August 26, 2005, a fire incurred in a charitable organizations hostel to house African immigrant hostel in Paris killed 14 children and 3 adults.

2003 – U.S. Flight Crash

On August 26, 2003, a Colgan Air Flight 9446 crashed after taking off from Barnstable Municipal. The airport in Yarmouth, Massachusetts killing  both the pilots on board.

1997 – Beni Ali Massacre

On August 26, 1997, Beni Ali massacre occurred the mountain hamlet of Beni Ali, Algeria, leaving 60 to 100 people dead.

1920 – U.S.A. 19th Amendment

On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote was formally adopted into the U.S. Constitution.

Composer Sally Beamish

On August 26, 1956, Sally Beamish, a British composer and violist was born. She also worked in the field of music, theatre, film and television. She went on to compose songs for children and for her local community.  She won many accolades.

Novelist Zona Gale

On August 26, 1874, Zona Gale, an American novelist, short story writer and playwright was born. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Cricketer Arnold Fothergill

On August 26, 1854, Arnold Fothergill, an English professional cricketer was born. He played first-class cricket for Somerset County Cricket Club and the MCC.

Actor Lon Chaney

Born on August 26, 1883, Lon Chaney, an American stage and screen actor, make-up artist, director and screenwriter was born. He was regarded as one of the most versatile and powerful actors of cinema and earned the nickname “The Man of a Thousand Faces”


Singer Cassie Ventura

On August 26, 1986, Cassie Ventura, an American singer, songwriter, model, actress, and dancer was born. She won the award for Most Performed Songs, Best R&B Video and Beauty The bombshell of the Year.
