Why do we celebrate World Prevention Suicide on September 10?

WSPF is applauded every year on September 10 to deliver global commitment and strategy to dissuade suicides, with various workouts since 2003.  On this particular day, several campaigns and social chores are released for the awareness of not preferring this harsh way to deal with our life difficulties.

The International Association of Suicide Prevention collaborated with World Health Organization and the World Federation Mental Health with the main agenda of talking openly about social stigmas and explanations which lead a person to end his/her life.

In 2011, 40 countries made this possible by participating in various events to minimize the number of suicides in the global index.

History – International 

• 1919 ~ Treaty of Saint-German

On September 10, 1919, a deal was signed between Austria and the twenty-seven Allied Powers at Saint-Germa,n-en-Laye near Paris, and came into force on July 16, 1920, which officially ended the World War I for the successor states of the former Astro- Hungarian monarchy.

• 1608 ~ John Smith was chosen president of Jamestown

British explorer and a creative writer John Smith vividly depicted the natural prosperity of the New World.

He became the first president of Jamestown, which was the first permanent English settlement in North America.

• 1721 ~ Second Northern War

The Second Northern War also called Great Northern War (1700-21) was held on 10th September 1721 under the Treaty of Nystad between Russia, Norway, and Poland on one side and Sweden and the Baltic Area on another. The war resulted in the decline of Swedish influence and the emergence of Russia as a major power.

• 1813 ~ Battle of Lake Erie

On September 10, 1813, U.S. controlled over the Lake Erie and the naval of U.S. forces under the command of Oliver Hazard Perry defeated the British during the War of 1812.

• 1988 ~ The Grand Slam of tennis

On this day, Steffi Graf completed the Grand Slam tennis by winning the U.S. Open and became the first woman to accomplish the feat since Margaret Court in 1970.

• 1974 ~ the Republic of Guinea-Bissau 

Guinea-Bissau a country of western Africa, which literally means the black of land fought for its freedom gained independence from Portugal on 10th September 1975.

History of India

• 1976~ Indian Airline Hijacked 

An Indian Airlines plane flying from Delhi to Bombay was hijacked and flown across the border of Lahore, Pakistan. The motive for this hijack is still unknown.

• 2001 ~ Actor of the Century Award

On 10th September 2001, Amitabh Bachchan was awarded as  Actor of the Century at the Alexandria film Festival.

• On 10th September 1934, American professional Baseball Player who held the record for most home runs was born.

• On this day in the year 1943, M. Mukundan Indian writer of Malayalam literature was born.
