1803 – British Empire captured Puri

18th September 1803, marked the black day which has witnessed the launch of a campaign for “occupation of the province of Cuttack” by East India Company in 14 days. Possession was taken from the town and the Temple of Jagannath by the British which concluded with the demolition of Puri.

1906 – Birth Anniversary of Kaka Hathrasi

Kaka Hathrasi was a Hindi satirist and humorist poet of India, born on 18th September 1906. He has 42 works to his credit, comprising a collection of humorous and satirical poems, prose, and plays published by various publishers. He also wrote three books on Indian classical music under the pen name “Vasant”. In 1932, he established Sangeet Karyalaya, a publishing house for the books on Indian classical music and dance, and started publishing a monthly magazine Sangeet in 1935.

1967- English as an Official Language of Nagaland

On 18th September 1967, the Nagaland Assembly proclaimed Indian English as the official language of Nagaland and it is the medium for education in Nagaland. Other than English, Nagamese, a creole language based on the Assamese is widely spoken.

1709 – Birth Anniversary of Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson often referred to as Dr. Johnson was born on 18th September 1709. He was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor, and lexicographer.

The concept of  Dictionary was also given by him only with the research of nine years of work known as A Dictionary of the English Language and was published in 1755.

1851 – First publication of The NewYork Times

The first edition of the newspaper The New York Times was published on September 18, 1851. It stated, “We publish today the first issue of the New-York Daily Times, and we intend to issue it every morning (Sundays excepted) for an indefinite number of years to come.” The founders of the New York Times companies were Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones.

1502 – Fourth Voyage of Christopher Columbus

On 18th September 1502, Christopher Columbus landed at Costa Rica on his fourth, and the final voyage. He made four transatlantic voyages: 1492–93, 1493–96, 1498–1500, and 1502–04 and travelled primarily to the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, Cuba, Santo Domingo, and Jamaica. In his latter two voyages, he travelled to the coasts of eastern Central America and northern South America.

2003 – World Water Monitoring Day

World Water Monitoring Day was established on 18th September 2003, by America’s Clean Water Foundation (ACWF) as a global educational outreach program. The program subsequently named the “World Water Monitoring Challenge” and “EarthEcho Water Challenge. It aims to build public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by empowering citizens to carry out basic monitoring of their local water bodies.
