History – International 

Events

2001 – Tamil Tigers attacked Bandaranaike Airport

On July 24, 2001, Tamil Tigers attacked the only International airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka destroying 6 passenger aircraft half the Sri Lankan Airways fleet and 8 military planes. 12 soldiers were injured, along with three Sri Lankan civilians and a Russian engineer. No tourists were harmed during the attack.

1969 – Apollo 11 Safely Returns to Earth

On July 24, 1969, Apollo 11, the U.S. spacecraft that had taken the first astronauts to the surface of the moon, safely returns to Earth.

1943 – Operation Gomorrah 

On July 24, 1943, Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States Army Air Forces began bombing Hamburg creating a firestorm and killed 42,600 people.

1911 – Re-discovery of Machu Picchu

On July 24, 1911, Hiram Bingham, a Yale history professor, re-discovers Machu Picchu in the Andes, the lost city of the Incas built in the mid-1400s.

1832 – First wagon train to cross South Pass

On July 24, 1832, Benjamin Bonneville, an inept fur trader, leads the first wagon train to cross the Rocky Mountains at Wyoming’s South Pass.

Births – International 

Composer Leo Arnaud

On July 24, 1904, Leo Arnaud, a French-American composer, was born. He was best known for “Bugler’s Dream”. It is used as the theme by television networks presenting the Olympic Games in the United States.

Novelist John Dann MacDonald

On July 24, 1916, John Dann MacDonald, an American novelist and short-story writer, was born. He was known for thrillers, author of crime and suspense novels.

Cricketer Zaheer Abbas

Born on July 24, 1947, Syed Zaheer Abbas Kirmani, former Pakistani cricketer was born. He was the first batsman to score three consecutive centuries in one-day internationals.

Actor John Aniston

Born on July 24, 1933, John Aniston, a Greek-American Actor was born. He is best known for his role in drama series ‘Days of Our Lives’.

History – Indian

Events

2005 – Earthquake hit 

On July 24, 2005, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 hit India’s southern Andaman and the Nicobar Islands and part of Indonesia. No tsunami came, and no injuries or damage were reported.

2004 – Police raided in Andhra Pradesh

On July 24, 2004, In India Coal and Mines Minister Shibu Soren resigned after an arrest warrant was issued against him on charges of inciting arson and violence during a rally.

1992 – Ninth President Elected

On July 24, 1992, Shankar Dayal Sharma is elected ninth Indian President.

1991 – Aires de Ornelas appointed as Archbishop

On July 24, 1991, India’s finance minister Manmohan Singh presented a budget to parliament. Singh said, “the room for manoeuvre, to live on borrowed money or time, does not exist anymore.” His speech marked India’s entry into global capitalism. The budget was in response to a balance of payments crisis.

1949 – 3 innocent teenagers killed

On July 24, 1949, Indian troops in Kashmir killed 3 innocent teenagers after troops mistook them for militants. Demonstrations followed among angry Kashmiri Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir, largely Hindu India’s only Muslim-majority state.

Births – Indian

Actor Manoj Kumar

On July 24, 1937, Manoj Kumar, an Indian actor was born. He was honoured with Padma Shri in 1992 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.

Civil Servant Peter de Noronha

On July 24, 1897, Peter De Noronha, a well-known businessman and civil servant of Kanpur was born. He was knighted by Pope Paul VI for his work for the Christian community in India.

Cricketer Bal Pandit

On July 24, 1929, Bal Pandit, an Indian cricketer, writer and broadcaster was born. He was president of Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA).

Composer Harshida Raval

On July 24, 1975, Vijay Antony, an Indian music composer, playback singer, actor, film editor, lyricist, audio engineer and film producer working predominantly in the Tamil film industry was born. He is best known for his roles in action thriller films.
