1959 – First Asian Woman swimmer to cross the English Channel

Arati Gupta mostly known as Arati Saha was an Indian Bengali long-distance swimmer, born on 24 September 1940, in Kolkata. In Indian history, she was best known for becoming the primary Asian woman to swim across the English Channel on 29 September 1959. In 1960, she became the primary Indian sportswoman to be awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor in India.

1932 – Birth Anniversary of Actor Mehmood Ali

Mehmood Ali was an Indian Actor, born on 29 September 1932 in Bombay. He was simply known as Mehmood, singer, producer, and is most popular for assuming comic functions in Hindi movies. During his profession of over forty years, he worked in more than 300 Hindi movies. He is known as India’s National comedian and got 25 Nominations for Filmfare grants,19 for Best Performance in Comic Role honors from1954 to 1967. He also got 6 nominations for ‘Best Supporting Actor’.

History – International

2000 – World Heart’s Day

World Heart Day was created by the World Heart Federation on September 29, 2000. The day is celebrated to informs people around the globe that CVD, including heart disease and stroke, is not a normal disease. It is leading the world by taking 17.9 million lives each year. So the day highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD.  

 

1911 –  Beginning of Italo – Turkish War 

 

The Italo-Turkish War was fought between the Kingdom of Italy and the Ottoman Empire from September 29, 1911, to October 18, 1912. The announcement of the First World War increased the necessity to bring back the troops to Italy. The proclamation by the Ottomans empire forced the Italians to abandon all occupied territory and to establish themselves in Tripoli, Derna, and on the coast of Cyrenaica.

 

1913 – Death Anniversary of Rudolf Diesel 

Rudolf Diesel was a German inventor and mechanical engineer, famous for the invention of the Diesel engine, and for his suspicious death at sea. Diesel was the namesake of the 1942 film Diesel. On September 29, 1913, he disappeared from the steamship Dresden while traveling from Antwerp, Belgium to Harwich, England. From that day only, the whole world pays tribute to him assuming it is his death anniversary.  By 1912, there were more than 70,000 diesel engines working around the world, mostly in factories and generators.

 

1899 – Birth Anniversary of Laszlo Biro

Laszlo Biro was a Hungarian-Argentine inventor, born on 29 September 1899 in Budapest, Hungary. He was the inventor who patented the first commercially successful modern ballpoint pen. The first ballpoint pen had been invented roughly 50 years earlier by John J. Loud, but it did not attain commercial success. In 1899, he was working as a journalist when he noticed a fundamental difference between two types of ink. Then only the idea of a ballpoint pen blinked in his mind and hence was invented.
