Events in the past have shaped the world as it is now. As we all know that thousands of things that happened in the past and remembering all of them for any purpose is simply not possible. People who played a role in Indian history on this day

1947 – Babita Kapoor born

Babita Kapoor is an Indian actress with a Sindhi and British descent. She has appeared in Hindi-language films and is the daughter of actor Hari Shivdasani. Her debut film was the successful drama Dus Lakh in 1966from 1966 to 1973 she played a lead heroine role in 19 films.

1950 – Nara Chandrababu Naidu born

Indian politician and leader of opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Telugu Desam Party) Nara Chandrababu Naidu was the first CM of Andhra since its divide.

1914 – Gopinath Mohanty born

Born in Cuttack district in Odisha Mohanty was a famous Oriya novelist who won the Jnanpith award. He was also the first winner of the National Sahitya Akademi Award in 1955, for his novel, Amrutara Santana.

1689 Siege of Derry begins

James II, the former British king started the siege of Derry, a protestant stronghold in Northern Ireland. James having encircled Derry and bombarded the fortified city which ravaged fire and many people lost their lives.

1777 Now York adopts State constitution

The first New York state constitution is formally adopted by the convention of Representatives of the state of New York, meeting in the upstate town of Kingston on this day in 1777.

1871 Ku Klux Act passed by Congress.

Popularly known as Ku Klux Act. Congress authorizes President Ulysses S. Grant to declare Martial Law, imposing heavy penalties and use military force to suppress the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). It was founded in 1865 by a group of Confederate veterans, KKK rapidly grew from a secret social fraternity to a paramilitary force determined on reversing the federal government’s progressive Reconstruction Era-activities.

1902 Marie and Pierre Curie isolate radium

Marie and Pierre Curie successfully isolate radioactive radium salts from the mineral pitchblende in their laboratory in Paris.

1945 operation Corncob launched

Allied bombers in Italy started a three-day attack over the rivers Adige and Brenta to cut off German lines of retreat on the Peninsula.

1971 “Fragging” boomed among US military units.

The Pentagon issues figures confirming that fragging incidents are on the upsurge. In 1970, 209 such incidents caused the deaths of 34 men; in 1969, 96 such incidents cost 34 men their lives. Fragging was a slang term used to describe U.S. military personnel tossing of fragmentation hand grenades (hence the term “fragging”) usually into sleeping areas to murder fellow soldiers.
