May 2 in History: Two Legends, Satyajit Ray and Mario Miranda were born

Every day has some historical significance in history. Events in the past have shaped the world as it is shaping now. As we all know that thousands of things that happened in the past and remembering all of them for any purpose is simply not possible. However, there are events that are necessary to remember for a specific purpose like competitive exams. Legendary Satyajit Ray born

Screenwriter, writer, composer, poet, cinematographer, and film producer Satyajit Ray was born on May 2, 1921, in West Bengal. Greatest Filmmaker of all times Satyajit Ray was born in a Bengali family which was very prominent in Art and literature. Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica’s Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves (1948) during a visit to London.

In his career, Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. Ray’s first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. Ray was awarded an honorary degree by Oxford university also. In 1992 Indian government honored his work with  Bharat Ratna, highest civilian award.

Famous Cartoonist Mario Miranda born

Born on May 2, 1926, in Portuguese India. Mário João Carlos do Rosário de Brito popularly known as Mario Miranda or Mario de Miranda was an Indian cartoonist and painter based in Loutolim in the Indian state of Goa. For his contribution government of India awarded him with the second-highest civilian award the Padma Vibhushan, in 2012.

Indian Classical Singer Vasantrao Deshpande born

Vasantrao Deshpande was also born on May 2, 1920, in Murtajapur, Maharashtra. Vasantrao Deshpande is a classical vocalist renowned for his contribution to Natya sangeet (musical dramas), particularly his role as “Khansaheb” in Katyar Kaljat Ghusli.

1960 King Charles II grants Charter to Hudson’s Bay company

King Charles II of England permits a permanent charter to the Hudson’s Bay Company. It was made up of a group of French explorers who opened the lucrative North American fur trade to London merchants. The charter not only gave them a trading monopoly ,but also effective control over the vast the region surrounding North America’s Hudson Bay.

1918 Allies argue US’s entry on the battlefield

On May 2, 1918, in a conference of Allied military leaders at Abbeville, France, the U.S., Britain and France argue over the entrance of American troops into World War I. British Prime Minister in  telegraph had urged to the US President Woodrow Wilson that without USA’s help they can’t withstand the war any delay by the US will be too late.

1941 Hostilities break out between British forces in Iraq and that country’s pro-German faction.

1945 German troops surrendered

On May 2, 1945, one of the biggest surrenders in the world was witnessed. Approximately 1 million German soldiers lay down their arms as the terms of the German unconditional surrender. Signed on April 29. Many Germans surrender to Japanese soldiers—Japanese Americans. Earlier on the same day, Russian Marshal Georgi K. Zhukov accepts the surrender of the German capital. The Red Army takes 134,000 German soldiers’ prisoner.

2001 Usama Bin Laden Killed

The mastermind behind the 9/11 attack, one of the biggest and deadliest attack ever carried in America, and the leader of Al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden is killed on May 2, 2001. The US forces killed him during raid on his compound hideout in Pakistan. America was after him for many decades. 2 Black Hawk helicopters carrying 23 Navy SEAL’s carried out this operation in which one of the helicopters crash-landed into the compound without any casualty.
